Like many of the rides built in the Enchanted Forest for Great Adventure's opening day, the Grand Prix was a portable ride imported from Europe. The land was cleared for the ride, and like with all of the construction at Great Adventure, care was taken to preserve as many trees as possible around the ride, keeping the feel of the forest and hiding the attractions from view until guests arrived at them.

The steel base frame was setup first on concrete bases, with the uprights added next. Section by section the floor of the track was assembled. The floor provided the power for the go-karts and the track featured a raised back section. With the track in place, the steel framework supporting the canvas roof was placed along with the ride's lighting. Finally the red and yellow canvas was stretched over the top.
