How would you redesign the Safari?

Safari Transportation

  1. 1. In your opinion, what would be the best means of transportation to experience the Safari?

I voted for my own car. One of the many reasons I prefer the Safari at Great Adventure over Kilimanjaro Safaris at Animal Kingdom is that you can go at your own pace and stop for as long as you want at each animal area. I feel like Kilimanjaro Safaris is rushed especially towards the end.

A monorail would be fun too. I remember the one at King's Dominion and really liked it as something different.

The only way I can think of it being enhanced is allowing you to drive in the monkey area again. I understand why they stopped allowing it but it was always one of my favorite parts of the safari.

Yoshi summed up my feelings exactly. I enjoy getting to go at my own pace through the safari.

A few years ago, my then fiance at the time, and I went to Animal Kingdom and were not impressed with Killimanjaro Safari because we have been through the Wild Safari multiple times. We came off the ride saying to ourselves that we see more at Six Flags than we see there. I'm sure we would have been more impressed if we had never been to the Wild Safari.

I'm not sure what land availability is like, but I would like to see the safari moved away from the park so that it feels more like a safari, without roller coasters passing by the animals.

A monorail would be awesome. An "open-air" one preferably that went over a few of the lakes, and away from the road.

I think it would be cool if they had a monorail in addition to the cars, so you could either drive through at your own pace, or ride the quicker monorail and get back to the theme park faster.

I know they fenced in the monkey area for a reason, but I think the Safari area would be better if visitors got to ride open-air vehicles.

And speaking of the monkeys, how about if the Safari put the monkeys in a special walk-thru section, like The Monkey Jungle in Miami? There the visitors got to go thru chain-link "tunnels" while the spider&squirrel monkeys climbed around you and reached for food(which was sold by the park specifically for those animals).

And the Miami Metrozoo had an amazing Gorilla exhibit:part of it was a man-made "cave" that visitors could go into and get a close-up look at the Gorillas thru plate glass. How about something like that at Great Adv.?

I think the Safari experience is good in a Safari van rather than a personal vehicle because not everyone knows how to re-act correctly to wild creatures.

I think the visitors need to be escorted thru the Safari experience with responsible employees who have quality animal training, for safety reasons.

The price of gas went up the very first year Great Adventure opened, in fact I was delayed 6 weeks on my return from Africa with the elephants because of the Arab Oil Embargo..gas shot up from 35 cents a gallon to about 75 and up..I would still like the Safari to stay the same, drive your own car and enjoy the animals at your own leasure. That is the only way to see all the things they do and enjoy them..We had alot of return people in the first two years and they would get my attention and ask about certain animals that became their favorites...but because of the things are now days most people just go to GA for the rides and stuff in the other part of the park..BE Proud that the Safari is still the largest one in the world and even tho it isnt like it was in the beginning, it is still a Great Safari Park..of course I am bia's because I was on the ground floor of it a year before it opened and I was sent to Africa to bring back the 25 baby elephants that are amongest the only animals that were there from DAY one. A few rhinos, and the two tortoise's in the other part of the park..

So perplexed by these rumors. I can't imagine the park eliminating the drive-thru-ness of the Safari completely. But wow, things could be about to get interesting.

Knowing SF, I'm worried they'll strip the thing down to save on animal care and turn it into some quick theme park ride with half the appeal of the current set up. Though on the other hand, we could have an awesome, innovative new attraction and a killer Golden Kingdom expansion to boot. It remains to be seen.

Either way, it feels (at least somewhat) telling that there's no visible work as yet, because a truly major job (a monorail, say) seems like it would have had to have been started by now to have some hope of opening next year.

how awesome would a steam engine train with enclosed cars bee going through the safari, id ride it on every trip!

I'd prefer open cars, like on the Safari at Busch Gardens Tampa ;)

I would rather drive my own car. That way I have control over stopping and looking at what I want to see.

Too many people roll down their windows to feed the animals. On the VIP Safari tour, we learned some animals have been fed non-food items such as batteries just because the people wanted to see what they would eat. This resulted in unnecessary invasive surgery for the safari's residents. Add to it the stuff that is technically edible but not good for them, and it's worth eliminating the potential for these problems...

So everyone should suffer because of a few jerks? That seems fair.

I see converting the Safari to tour vans is going to be a capacity nightmare and an excuse for SF to downsize the Safari while adding even more upcharges to see it.

The only way to prevent stupid people from doing stupid things in the Safari is not allow any people in their at all except for handlers.

I have seen people throw hard candy and other objects off of roller coasters at other people. So do we not allow people to ride roller coasters at all or do we strap their arms down so they can't throw stuff? Then they can still spit, so do we force riders to wear anti spiting masks? People have choked to death while chewing gum on roller coasters, should the employees check everyone's mouths to make sure they aren't chewing gum? How about doing away with the parking lot to eliminate auto accidents, just force everyone to take a bus or walk to the park. People do drown in water parks from time to time, so should we close down HH and fill it in? How far are you willing to go to make things "safe"? Heck both Roaring Rapids and Kingda Ka have killed animals this year, they should be ripped out for safety.

With open air vans, people could still throw stuff out of them or even hop out and hurt animals, they would have to be enclosed for safety. A rowdy group of riders could still try to overpower the driver and cause the van to crash. Even a van driver just being inattentive for just a split moment could still crash or run something over. A monorail can derail or crash into another monrail or run over birds who landed on the track. The Philly Zoo used to have a monorail but it suffered from derailments so badly they removed it.

If SF really did care about the animals they would shut down the Safari and transport all the animals to a reserve away from people.

Yeah.... I think you blew that way out of proportion... So out of proportion... The safari will be a dry park attraction now and it will be free. It is going to be a lot better than it currently is. Just wait until the official announcement before you complain about it, that is a major gripe I have.

^ Trying to use an Appeal to Ridicule fallacy I see.

If they do this it will suck. Everytime SF does a major change like this it is almost always for the worse so they can grab or save an extra buck.

Locker nazis suck, flashpass over in HH making standby lines there artificially longer sucks, ads everywhere looks trashy and sucks, almost all the FF attractions being upcharges sucks, closing off the middle in GK sucks, not doing anything with Old Country sucks, etc. I do not see this being different.

Part of the Safari's appeal is to get away from the smelly crowds for awhile, not to be jammed into a small van with them and another long line to boot. I can easily see SF only running one or two vans most of the time regardless of wait times.

My major gripe are the yes-men who go into denial over really bad ideas like this.

Personally I think a much better solution is to install invisible fencing along the road so animals can't reach the cars to eat stuff from the few stupid people.

That is my opinion and if someone disagrees then they can disagree.
