What would Viacom be like if...

Recommended Posts

I just started to wonder what viacom would be like if they didnt split cbs the first time back in 2005. What things would be different? I guess upn would've stayed with viacom (therefore time warner would still owned the wb meant the cw would never exist), the company not become so greedy, paramount parks never would've been sold to cedar fair, and bad nicktoons like breadwinners would've probably never been made. What do you think?

The media companies are often short sighted. They get the pressure from the shareholders to make more money, but the parks are something that go a long way to promote the brand. They don't always make piles of money, but they're generally profitable.

Disney has always understood the value of the cross promotions with the parks. Comcast has now figured that out as well. Because they saw the value and invested in their parks, they have now come to rely on the parks as part of their growth and profit strategies. Both Disney and Comcast see the theme parks as a growing and profitable part of their business while other segments of their business have tapered off or declined.

Time Warner and Viacom gave up on the parks too soon because they accumulated too much debt and needed fast cash. In the long term they would have made more keeping the parks. When In-Bev acquired Anheuser Busch they did the same thing, trying to make fast cash. They failed to see the opportunity for cross promotion and good will the parks created the way the Busch Family did.

How would they handled Blackfish then?

Blackfish would have been a minimal problem under Busch. They had a great PR machine that constantly talked about their commitment to the environment.

More than that the whole issue they had with musical acts cancelling and badmouthing the parks would never have happened. AB spent a fortune as a tour sponsor for so many acts. They never had the balls to say much for fear of losing out on that money. All of a sudden Sheryl Crow, Barenaked Ladies, etc decided they couldn't play SeaWorld anymore once AB was out of the picture. All of a sudden PETA's social media campaigns had an effect on artists where in the past they shrugged it off.

They were also privately owned which ironically when they announced they were going to go public, Blackfish was only released a few weeks later.

Sorry to be conspiracy theorist here.
