I do remember so well the Opening Day of the park. It was special for sure. We were at the park late into the night before getting the animals to the Happy Feeling Petting Zoo. The Safari opening was OK just had to keep the cars moving so they didn't overheat! Ostriches were bad to block cars and slow traffic, but no major problems that I recall. So long ago now!

Did they open the Safari Park before the Theme Park that morning? Was there a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Safari?

Ya know, being that we were there until late the night before and really just going home grab a few hours sleep and back very early that morning, I think that everyone actually went through the Safari before they went to the ride area of the park? Being brand new who wouldn't want to see the animals first? Again I was in my section and at the Elephant/Rhino barn the whole day except to push a few cars out to the front gate where it looked like crazy busy!
