As mentioned in the Schwabinchen Spotlight, here are some photos of European Schwabinchen dolls, similar to the female figure originally featured in the center of Great Adventure's ride. More information on these dolls can be found HERE.

Schwabinchen, was sold outside of Germany, in Sweeden and Holland, under the names of Betty, and Willy Wildebras.

Here's a link to a video of the late Jean Shepherd stopping at South of the Border. Look like he stopped there during better days for SOB.

I was there on Saturday and it was a real dump. There were only a few visitors and only the ferris wheel was operating. Everything else was rusting away. I wish they would sell that sombrero ride! We never stopped when I was a kid, and I'm glad my parents spared me the visit. I could be a nice place.

Hey Dan, it doesn't sound like it has gotten any better since when I stopped in last. Those billboards are a good marketing tool - you almost feel obligated to stop in and at least take a pee or something after being "entertained" for so many miles! Once you get there it's a huge let down.

It is sort of like the billboards and advertisements they had for Keansburg Amusement Park. They proclaimed over 100 attractions. I think they must have been counting every Skeeball game individually.

South of the Border is a definition of a tourist trap to me. I rememer around 5 or 6 years ago we stopped to use the restrooms there and everything was so run down and in bad shape. There was actually a wedding going on at the hotel.

Even if the coaster they had was running, I don't think I would trust it.

Still, I always look forward to seeing it since it means we are over half way to WDW.

This would be a great ride to bring back. One of my all-time favorites. Anybody ever steal any light bulbs?

Wow, after getting this new shot I now realize that I had forgotten about some of the details on the Schwabinchen's backdrop. This picture was taken in August 1982.

That's a great shot, and also I love seeing the guest in the foreground with the poster map. I think most people forget that for a while that used to be the ONLY type of maps in the park and you had to buy them (or just use the maps in the map boxes around the park).

I just ran across this photo that I took at Cedar Point back in June 2007. This Schwabinchen figure was hand carved and available in their woodworker's shop. Cedar Point once had the same model ride as Great Adventure.
