Our neighbors to the north at La Ronde are once again battling with Great Adventure in the Six Flags Tournament of Thrills. El Toro went down, but VOTE now so Nitro doesn't suffer the same blow.

The Monster takes on Nitro... with Bernard Landry in its corner!

<< The Tournament of Thrills semi-final round starts today for La Ronde's Monster - one of three remaining rollercoasters in the competition >>

MONTREAL, Aug. 24 /CNW Telbec/ - Enjoying support from several well-known personalities including former Québec premier Bernard Landry, The Monster gets back into action this week in The Tournament of Thrills, a Facebook-hosted competition pitting great North American rollercoasters against one another; only two other competitors remain. Until midnight on Sunday, La Ronde's iconic rollercoaster will square off against Nitro in semi-final action. If The Monster prevails, it will face the winner of the Western semi-finals starting August 31. And on September 7, the winner of The Tournament of Thrills will finally be known.

In addition to Bernard Landry, ten or so well-known personalities, including Ricardo Larivée, Andrée Watters and Mike Gauthier, have agreed to record a message of support for The Monster. These short videos will be shown throughout the week on La Ronde's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/laronde.sixflags. To vote for The Monster, fans can simply go to www.facebook.com/sixflags. La Ronde employees have themselves recorded a support video to the classic tune of "We Will Rock You".

Nitro is the second ride at Great Adventure in New Jersey to face The Monster. Earlier in the competition, La Ronde's ride defeated El Toro, 62% to 38%, which will certainly incite fans in New Jersey to seek revenge. Recently, the web administrator for Great Adventure wrote: "We CANNOT let this happen again. Tell your family, friends, pets, and plants that Nitro must beat The Monster!"

La Ronde spokesman Martin Roy invited Montrealers as well as all Quebecers and Canadians to repeat their Monopoly success - that is, to unite their voices and help raise Montreal's and La Ronde's profile in the U.S. just as they did when their votes placed Montreal among the most prestigious property group in Hasbro's new MONOPOLY Here & Now: The World Edition board game.

Sixteen rollercoasters entered the Tournament of Thrills competition; only 6 are left. A little over a month ago, The Monster eliminated The Comet, a rollercoaster located at Lake George in upstate New York. The Monster has spawned many imitators but has never been equalled. It is the highest double wooden rollercoaster in the world, featuring two parallel but not identical runs with respective track lengths of 1,218 and 1,227 metres - making it thrillingly unique! The trains on the Monster can get up to speeds reaching 96 km/hr. The Monster was built in 1985 and 1986 by William Cobb & Associates.
