Summer 1977

The following series of photos are screen captures from  a vintage 8mm film which shares the highlights of a family's visits to Great Adventure.  The 1977 season's capital investment centered around an extensive entertainment lineup, as is evident in the number of photographs of the various shows and parade.

Enjoy this Retro Trip Report all the way back to the summer of 1977!

Guests decide to take the bus from the Safari Hospitality Center instead of drive their car. A quick look back to the Safari Entrance Plaza and they are on their way! The bus offers views of the Safari from a much higher perspective than a car.

The elephants aren't fenced in and are kept away from traffic by an on-site warden.

Another warden stands guard at the tail end of the lion section lock-out gate to limit the number of cars into the area. The Safar trucks were accessorized with a heavy duty bumper, loud speaker to warn guests, and a riffle in the cab just incase.

The baboons look for a snack on a passing vehicle - maybe some weather stripping or a wiper blade. A marching band made the rounds of the park.

A couple of talented street characters welcomed visitors as they entered the park. Tall spotlight columns dotted the perimeter of the Yum Yum Palace to illuminate it at night. The ice cream parlor themed interior of the Yum Yum Palace was a perfect match for this fanciful eatery.

Dueling divers try to send each other into the drink and win the match. The Fountain Snack Stand offered umbrella covered tables alongside colorful flowerbeds. The Dream Street Dazzler offered a thrilling ride compared to the tame Carousel.

The Bandstand on the Lake hosted a musical stage show. In addition to a high dive show, the Aqua Spectacle also had a dolphin and sea lion show.

The Lipizanner Stallions performed tricks in the Great Arena. The beautiful Conestoga Wagon's colorful paint job complemented the ornate Super Tee Pee next door.

Traffic flowed down Dream Street before the planter near the Carousel blocked the way.

The Great Parade made its way down Dream Street enticing guests to follow it to the Great Arena where even more entertainment awaited.
