The following is the original proposal and concept artwork for Great Adventure which was presented to potential investors in the park.   The plans were quite ambitious, and were never fully realized, though some of the earliest concepts appeared in the park in slightly different form when it finally opened in 1974.   The text is verbatim from the original typewritten proposal and is worded and punctuated exactly as it was originally written.

THE AREAS

VI. SPORTS AND GAMES

An area devoted to sports containing:

1.    An arena with an Olympic size ice rink enclosed with a clear dome, and open all year long.

2.    A roller skating rink.

3.    An arena with an Olympic swimming pool and basketball court.

4.    An outdoor arena to house circuses, rodeos, historical pageants and other activities.

5.    A large sports store.

6.    Bowling alley.

7.    Restaurants and snack bars.

Notes:

The Sports and Games area never made it off the drawing boards, though at different times in the park's history other sports developments were considered for the property, including a minor league baseball stadium.

The outdoor arena was incorporated into the Enchanted Forest as The Great Arena, and did feature circus acts and western shows as proposed here.

Disney had attempted a similar idea in the 1960's with the Celebrity Sports Center in Glendale Colorado, combining bowling, swimming, games and other amusements.
